A Host of Issues

May 14, 2013

I’ve been frustrated with my hosting company for a while now, but this week, we’re breaking up for good.

I’ve tried to be patient during occasional downtime, although it is crazy frustrating, and for some reason always seems to come at the worst times.  Last week, they told me my site had hit the RAM limit, although “for security reasons” they couldn’t tell me what that limit is.  {Insert eye roll}

The real problem with Dream Host is that they have a very traditional set up.  They have a bunch of servers, and they group several people onto one server, and hope for the best.  And when the best doesn’t work out, they shut someone down.  And that someone was me.  {It solved the problem for THEM, anyway.} Read more…

April 2013

May 10, 2013

Some pretty awesome stuff happened in April.  It was crazy fun!

First up, traffic numbers.  Over 71,000 this month!  It’s fun to go back and look at these traffic jumps.  I was so excited when I jumped from 7k to 24k in October 2012, and when I had over 50k last month.  I really did not expect to have such high numbers in April, and I think it might be tough to beat that new benchmark in May.  It does make me feel like 100k is right around the corner, though, which gives me great hope. Going Out Like a Lamb

April 30, 2013

April really has been a roller coaster for me.

The biggest {and completely unexpected} development this month is that I need new hosting.  I was thinking I had a while before I ran into this problem, but I apparently have hitched myself to one of the more thumbs-down hosting companies.

I was preparing for another holiday group post, which went live last Friday.  This one was for Cinco de Mayo.  On Thursday, my site refused to load ALL morning.  After a few hours of waiting, assuming the hosting company was having a server issue, and hoping, I finally jumped onto the live chat support to find out what was happening. Hit the NOS!

blog traffic

It has been a crazy week.  I’ve literally had a new high traffic day FOUR times this week.

FOUR.  In one week.  What is happening?

Thursday finished strong with over 3300 pageviews, but when I woke up Friday, and jumped on at around 8 am, I found this interesting development. (square thumbnail snip was taken just before 8 am)  This is the strangest traffic development I have ever seen.

Roller Coasters

blog traffic

It was a pretty good weekend.  I broke my previous high traffic record on Saturday, with 2452 pageviews.  Then, I broke it again on Sunday, with 2962 pageviews!  Exciting stuff.

I was double excited because I had really wanted my next record to just shatter the old record.  Previously, high traffic days were about 100 pageviews (or less) different from the broken record.  This one was over 800 pageviews more!  It’s probably not substantial to some, but to me, it is. March 2013

blog traffic

April is almost half over, and I’m finally getting around to posting about March.  This explains a lot about my entire life right now, actually.

As you can see from the picture, I earned $42.71 this month.  My 14 year old thinks this is super cool.  (Actually, the exact phrase was “It’s a boss!” but I told him I couldn’t use that phrase, because I don’t want people thinking I’m 14.)  I’m trying really hard to think it’s cool, but I’m frustrated.  There are days when I think a food blog was the worst idea I ever had.

But I tell myself that someday I will say it was the best idea I ever had. Read more…

Facebook is the Biggest Freaking Mystery

April 5, 2013
facebook

There’s been a lot of talk lately about Facebook and how frustrating it is as a page owner to use.  Fewer and fewer of a page’s followers actually see the posts that are shared.  And, Facebook is pushing page owners more and more to purchase promoted posts and ads.

I’ve been trying out a new tactic the last few days.  This tactic involves basically telling people (in capital letters… so screaming at them, really) to CLICK SHARE to save the post to their own wall, where they can find it later.  The results?  Shares have gone up, for sure.  New likes have gone up, and I’m not sure if there’s anything besides this new wording to attribute them to.
